Texas Bluebonnet
There’s a whole lot of reading going on in Texas !
The Texas Bluebonnet Award Reading Program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of
current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. The
award process provides librarians, teachers, parents, and writers with insight into young
students' reading preferences. It further affords an opportunity to honor and encourage
imaginative authors who create books with high appeal to children.
Levine Academy students in grades 3-6 participate with great enthusiasm in the
Bluebonnet Reading Program. Each year’s master list of 20 titles is selected with
the belief that the books on it will help children develop a lifelong love of reading.
Particular books speak deeply to individual readers, books where the characters
spark a moment of understanding, where the plot moves so quickly that a child just
doesn't want to stop reading, where a subject opens up an entire avenue of inquiry,
and where the conflict and theme are personally fulfilling.
Students must read (or listen to) a minimum of 5 books to be eligible to cast a ballot for
their favorite at a special voting party each January. Have you ever been here during
voting week?...Come see for yourself how proud our students are to wear their “I voted
today” stickers!
Over 2,000 libraries across Texas support the Texas Bluebonnet Program, and Levine Academy
is proudly 1 of them!
The winning book is announced each February.
