Award Books

Most Medal winners and Honor Books are available for checkout from the Levine Academy libraries. Click on any link for a complete list of titles. The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) administers the following literary awards:

  • The John Newbery Medal honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
  • The Randolph Caldecott Medal the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
  • The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award Medal honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.
  • The Andrew Carnegie Medal honors the producer of the most outstanding video production for children released during the previous year.
  • The Mildred L. Batchelder Award is awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.
  • The Pura Belpre Award Medal honors a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose works best portray, affirm, and celebrate the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
  • The Robert F. Sibert Medal honors the author of the most distinguished informational book published during the preceding year.
  • The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award honors the author and illustrator of the most distinguished contribution to the body of American children’s literature known as Beginning Reader Books published in the United States during the preceding year.
  • The Coretta Scott King Book Award is given to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an outstanding inspirational and educational contribution to children’s literature. The books promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream.

Additionally, the ALSC recommends exemplary books, videos, recordings, and computer software for children on their Children's Notable Lists.

Sydney Taylor Book Awards, sponsored by The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL), recognizes quality Jewish children’s literature. Medals are presented in two categories: Younger Readers and Older Readers.
